Select Demo was contracted directly by a Boston-based real estate/investment/management firm to perform the demolition of 330,000 SF of existing barns at the former Suffolk Downs racetrack. The majority of barns had asbestos containing roofs so demolition was completed in accordance with a Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Nontraditional Work Plan DEP NTWP with waste being bulk-loaded utilizing heavy equipment. The ground was protected by poly in order to prevent asbestos from mixing with ground soils. Select’s scope also included the removal of all light poles, erosion control, SWPP maintenance, concrete crushing to 3" minus and the pulverization of pavement. This redevelopment project will create a new neighborhood with an active, lively and appropriate mix of uses (including retail, residential, office, lab, hotel, and other uses), connected and supported by new publicly-accessible open space, neighborhood retail, and civic spaces.
