Merck Cherokee Facility – Phase 1, Riverside, PA

Project Value Range: $2 million - $2.5 million

Select Demo was contracted by Merck, a multinational pharmaceutical company that develops and manufactures medicines, vaccines, biologic therapies, and animal health products, to perform the decontamination and demolition of their facility in Riverside, PA, which halted operations in 2024. Select’s scope consisted of asbestos abatement and decontamination of multiple active pharmaceutical ingredients (API’s) on all building surfaces and process equipment, as well as identifying and flushing of all process lines that contained sulfuric acid, sodium hypochlorite, nitric acid and methanol. The demolition included the removal and disposal of three manufacturing structures totaling 250,000 SF, two manufacturing fermenters and associated process lines. The five-story manufacturing building was located six feet from an active roadway, requiring the construction of the staging to protect active processing/steam lines and the removal of the five-story brick façade by hand prior to the mechanical demolition using a CAT 390 high reach excavator.
